Module 2 — Cleaning the Gradebook

Real data is messy.

Every teacher in America starts every quarter with a gradebook that has problems in it. Missing scores. Late submissions. Inconsistent entries. Before you can analyze anything, you have to deal with what's actually there — and decide what the gaps mean.

In this module you're going to do the most underrated skill in education data: looking at blanks and asking "what does this missing cell actually mean?"

Find the missing data.

The table below shows all 32 students. Some students have missing quiz scores or test scores. How many students are missing at least one assessment?

A blank cell is a question, not an answer.

There's one student in the gradebook — let's call her Sofia Garcia — who is missing both her Quiz 4 score and her Test 2 score.

A lot of new teachers see a missing grade and just type a "0". That's a decision — and it's usually the wrong one.

A "0" assumes she took the assessment and failed. A blank says: "I don't know what happened — and I should find out."

Before you decide how to treat Sofia's missing data, what would you want to know?

Pick the question you'd ask first.

Was she absent on those days? Did her absence have a reason (medical, family)? How were her earlier grades trending? All of the above — I need context, not a quick answer

Three ways to handle a missing grade.

Real teachers do one of three things with a blank cell. Each one tells a different story about the student.

Treat as zero

Easy. Drags down the average. Punishes attendance issues. Use only when you're sure they were present and didn't do it.

Exclude from the average

Most accurate for trends. Sofia's average stays a true reflection of what she did complete. But it can hide that something is wrong.

Flag for follow-up

The teacher answer. Mark it, don't average it, and ask: why is this blank? This is the move you'll learn in this workshop.
