A chart can save a student. Or hide one.

You're about to see why a single chart, drawn the right way, would have caught Sofia Garcia six weeks earlier than her grades did. Then you'll see why the same data can be drawn to tell two completely different stories — and why teachers need to know both versions.

If you only looked at Sofia's quiz grades, you'd think she was your top student. Look:

This is the chart most teachers see. Her quizzes look stellar — 96, 96, 89. The fourth one is missing, but the trend looks like a strong A student.

But now let's look at the same student through a different chart.

Sofia Garcia. Weekly attendance.

The cliff is at week 5.

Sofia stopped coming to class. Her grades didn't catch up to the truth for another three weeks — by then she'd missed Test 2 entirely and the damage was done.

If her teacher had looked at this chart every Friday, the intervention would have happened in week 6, not at the end of the quarter.

This is what your future classroom needs. Not more grades. Different views of the same data.

Same data. Two different stories.

Here's Marcus Johnson's quiz scores. Same numbers in both charts. The only thing that's different is the y-axis.

Chart A: 0–100 axis

"He's struggling, but consistently"

Chart B: zoomed y-axis

"He's in catastrophic free-fall"

Imagine you're presenting Marcus's case at an MTSS meeting. Which chart do you bring? Which one does Marcus's parent see?

Both charts are technically correct. Both are also persuasive. As a teacher you need to:

Read every chart asking "where does the y-axis start?"
Notice when you're being shown the dramatic version
Choose the version that helps the student, not the version that wins the argument
